Northern Albion Association Football Club were originally formed in 1892 by a collection of workers from the Knackme Glue & Dog Food Factory which made a lucrative trade from converting animals deemed unfit for human consumption into adhesive and pet food products.
Initially known as Knackers Yard FC, which was soon shortened to "The Knackers" and remains their nickname to this day, they played briefly under the guise of Stickyhorse Palace and then Dogscoff Athletic before finally settling on their current Northern Albion moniker.
For most of their history they laboured in the lower reaches of the football league, seeking re-election on a number of occasions and narrowly avoiding relegation to the Conference in later years. However, their fortunes changed in the early part of the 21st century when they commenced a slow but steady climb through the divisions under the guidance of then manager "Huge Reg" Williamson. Unfortunately for him, although Williamson eventually delivered the ultimate prize, promotion to the Premier League via the 2006-07 Play-off Final, he departed the club soon afterwards under a cloud when he was caught on a microphone at a pre-season friendly with Norwich City saying something very sexist indeed about Canaries director, Delia Smith. However, "one man's loss is another man's gain" and within days Jock Ratties has been installed into the Knackers' hotseat. The rest, as they say, is history.... |
