17.10.07: Reacting to England's defeat in Moscow

Click Here To Zoom In On This Image This jibe was published only hours after England crashed to a 2-1 defeat to Russia in a crucial European Championship qualifier. The loss left England's qualification hopes dangling by a thread and the main controversy surrounded a questionable penalty awarded to Russia which proved to be the turning point in the game. Slow motion replays showed only marginal contact between Wayne Rooney and the advancing Russian player and also highlighted how the tussle clearly took place outside the penalty area. Cue Jock...

22.10.07: Post match after Spurs lose again

Click Here To Zoom In On This Image Published hours after Tottenham Hotspur crashed to 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United which left them with only one victory from ten games despite a massive summer spending spree.

Being a man whose cultural compass is forever stuck in the late seventies/early eighties Jock couldn't resist making an obvious (for him) reference to a pop group of the time who derived their name from an unemployment benefit form and who had a song title which perfectly summarised Jol's dismal sequence of results...

22.11.07: Reacting to England's defeat to Croatia at Wembley

Click Here To Zoom In On This Image This jibe was published only hours after England's abject and humbling home defeat to Croatia that put the final nail in the coffin of their hopes of qualifying for the 2008 European Championship finals in Austria and Switzerland.

England manager Steve McClaren had often commented that he should be judged solely on results and Jock Ratties was happy to take him at his word. Indeed, so were the Football Association who promptly terminated McClaren's contract at a hastily arranged board meeting early the following morning.

18.12.07: Reacting to the appointment of Fabio Capello

Only a month after the sacking of "the Wally with the brolly" and an initial courting of Jose Mourinho the Football Association eventually confirmed the appointment of legendary Italian coach Fabio Capello as the new England manager.

While receiving a generally warm welcome from the media there were mutterings in some quarters concerning Don Fabio's lack of fluency in the English language. Cue Jock Ratties with his own take on the issue.

09.01.08: Reacting to Newcastle's sacking of Sam Allardyce

Click Here To Zoom In On This Image This jibe was published in the hours after Sam Allardyce was sacked as manager of Newcastle United only eight months after taking up the reigns.

On his appointment Allardyce had spoken of needing "three to five years" to turn the club around into the Premier League force that their fans, perhaps misguidedly, feel the Magpies should be by default. In the end he lasted a mere 21 league games before receiving his marching orders, leaving the club searching for their eighth manager in eleven years.

Such a preposterous short-term strategy could not go uncommented upon by Jock.

16.01.08: Reacting to Keegan's return to Newcastle

Click Here To Zoom In On This Image This jibe was published in the hours after Kevin Keegan made a shock return to Newcastle United as manager, eleven years after walking away from the very same job.

After failing to lure Harry Redknapp from the luxury of his South Coast lifestyle, the club were thought to be targeting either Gerrard Houllier or Didier Deschamps as their next man in the hotseat. Keegan's return therefore took many by surprise given the long odds on him and the fact that he had formally retired from football management in 2005 to run a "Soccer Circus" theme park in Glasgow.

Jock Ratties was left distinctly unimpressed by this latest turn of events in the Tyneside footballing soap opera.

11.02.08 - Reacting to Man City's win at Old Trafford

Click Here To Zoom In On This Image The pre-match focus of the awkwardly scheduled Manchester derby so close to the 50th anniversary of the Munich disaster was on whether the planned minute's silence could be completed without incident.

With United wearing logo-less shirts reminiscent of the style of the late 1950's, and much to the credit of the 76,000 in attendance, the silence was observed impeccably. As such, the post-match headlines were instead able to report the fact that City went on to win at the home of their more celebrated rivals for the first time since 1974, in the process completing an unlikely league double over United.
